About
Federico Protto
Federico Protto was born in Montevideo, Uruguay, in 1991 and is based in Brussels, Belgium. His artistic practice unfolds across and between performance, sound, textile and fashion, and artistic research. Spanning a hybrid network of collaborators, disciplines, and materialities, Federico aims at configuring new forms of shared knowledge production and kinship. Drawing on a diverse set of live-sonic-textile methodologies, Federico considers his South American background to look towards practices atypical to the global north. Key to this approach is translation as a method, linking artistic fields, source materials, senses of belonging and ancestry, and migrations.
Together with collaborators, among others Anna Lugmeier, Aleks Borys, Stefan Cantante, and Myriam Van Imschoot, Federico investigates sonic and performative experiments within social and communal environments. His work has been shown internationally, e.g. at nadaLokal, Vienna (AT), the 22nd Red Dawns Festival, Ljubljana (SVN), From Breath to Matter, Berlin (DE), HochX, Munich (DE), ModaLisboa, Lisbon (PT), Harpa, Reykjavik (IS), and Volksroom, Brussels (BE). He graduated in fashion design from the University of Applied Arts in Vienna (AT), and consequently in artistic research at a.pass – advanced performance and scenography studies – in Brussels (BE).
