About

Federico Protto

I am Federico Protto, a multidisciplinary artists born in Montevideo, Uruguay, living and working in Brussels.

My artistic practice unfolds across performance, sound, installation, and research. In my works different practices like choreography, music, textile, sculpture, and texts cross and merge into ‘dynamic installations’. Federico is interested in sharing stories around migration and our movements through the world(s). Myths, ancestral notions, and fiction are recurring elements within their practice. Spanning a hybrid network of materialities, practices, and collaborators Federico’s work aims at contributing to innovative & im/material forms and tools for a decolonial and cross-continental kinship. For example, the performance work ‘Dress-Rehearslas’, 2022, proposes a proto-esoteric gathering blending performance, workshop, ritual, and installation, addressing questions of heritage collectively. Texts, songs, dances, languages, costumes, objects, paintings, and audio-visual works are activated through instinct, impulse, humour and spontaneity. The multidisciplinary work harbours methods atypical to the global north, nourished by ethno-ecological, queer, and subcultural thought and approach.
My close and longterm collaborators are, among others, Stefan Cantante, Anna Lugmeier, Myriam Van Imschoot, and Lisa Deml. His work has been in touch with several international artistic protagonists, such as DeSingel, Antwerp (BE), MOMU fashion museum, Antwerp (BE), Red Dawns, international queer and feminist festival, Ljubljana (LSV), Centro Cultural de España, Montevideo (UY), Volksroom, Brussels (BE), ModaLisboa, Lisbon (PT), Hošek Contemporary Gallery, Berlin (DE), Weltmuseum Wien, Vienna (AT), wpZimmer, Antwerp (BE) and kunstencentrum BUDA, Kortrijk (BE).
I studied artistic research (Post-MA) at a.pass Brussels (BE) and fashion design (MA) at University of Applied Arts, Vienna (AT), and Iceland University of the Arts, Reykjavik (IS). Currently they are is working with Myriam Van Imschoot on the long-term sound-art and performance project ‘COUR’, at Laboratories d’Aubervilliers, Paris-Region (FR), and with Jimena Pérez Salerno on a choreographic duet and artistic research ‘MAPA’ in Brussels (BE).
