About

Federico Protto

Federico Protto invigorates interstitial spaces of performance, music, costume and fashion, and artistic research. Spanning a hybrid network of collaborators, disciplines, and materialities, his artistic practice aims to invoke the spirits of mythical pasts and futures to address questions of the present. Approaching research as practice, Federico questions conventions of intellectual expertise and individualized authorship in order to configure new forms of shared knowledge production and kinship.

Performative, musical, and poetic endeavours are gathered within the mantle of FEDERICO LUZ. The playful but determined performative and sonic experiments draw upon a wide register of source materials and leitmotifs who are summoned by archaic and digital instruments and voices. Federico Luz’ performances function as vehicles to channel synergies invested in the commonality of the performed space and condense into sensual experiences.

Federico designs costumes like zones of contact, interstices in themselves, providing the possibility of rehearsals of togetherness. The garments and objects negotiate veracity and vulnerability, mediating inner and outer worlds. To him, fashion is an act of translation, expressing current socio-political-cultural-natural realities through a textile vocabulary. This fabric language expands materiality and acquires autonomy and agency to be animated through human interaction. What emerges are uniforms of imagination that transport their carrier into a state of connectivity.

Collective practice and establishing symbiotic bonds is both cause and effect of Federico’s artistic projects, founded on the belief that there can be difference without separability. This pathway to sustainability is reflected in various cross-disciplinary projects and collectives, such as the phantasmatic power figure OLIVER.

Through these constellations, Federico navigates as a ferryman providing care and companionship on a collective journey. His artistic practice acts as a vessel, harbouring spirituality and sensibility for transcendent exchange. With an alternating crew and an evolving set of artistic tools, Federico Protto has set out to explore how kinship materialises across time and space.

Federico Protto was born 1991 in Montevideo, Uruguay, and is based in Brussels, Belgium.
