Created under turbulent emotional conditions, this collection was affected by my personal consideration of what I needed and how I wanted to live. I started to put the designs, which were initially inspired by 90’s South American Reggaeton performers and stereotypical imagery of aliens, into dialogue with a wider network of collaborators and friends: artists, designers, performers, musicians, etc. These dialogues gave rise to sustainable and subversive methods of designing and extended the clothes’ lives as well as their ‘liveness’. This opens up questions on the conventions of the fashion industry/education/funding system.
The garments in 2019 MUSES also triggered and sparked the project ‘Federico Luz’ and ‘Federico Luz Tour’ in 2018/2019. Because it is manifested on stages, 2019 MUSES knocks – with a cheeky smile – on the dusty door of the never-ending ‘fashion VS costume’ debate.
